Good Owners Dog Training

Living with a dog who pulls on the lead, jumps up, barks, reacts to other dogs or struggles to settle can be exhausting. Many owners feel overwhelmed, frustrated or unsure where to turn, even though they’re trying their best.

At Good Owners Dog Training, we understand that every behaviour happens for a reason. That’s why we don’t just focus on stopping unwanted behaviours—we help dogs develop the emotional flexibility they need to think clearly, learn effectively and enjoy everyday life. Everything we teach has been shaped by years of professional experience, scientific study and living alongside our own reactive dogs.

Our Pathways

Puppy‘s Life Skills

Build the calm and confidence they need for everyday life.

Reactivity Support

Helping dogs feel safer and more comfortable in their environment.

Everyday Life Skills

Helping dogs build calm, confidence and practical life skills for everyday living.

Rather than asking dogs to simply do what they’re told, we look at the whole picture—their emotions, environment, communication, movement, handling and daily routines. When dogs feel safe, understood and better able to think, learning becomes easier and lasting behaviour change can begin.

Our goal isn’t to create perfectly behaved dogs. It’s to help you build a calmer, more enjoyable life together, where both you and your dog can feel more confident navigating the real world.

Sometimes it’s not just the dog who’s overwhelmed. It’s the owner, too.

Services are available throughout Gloucestershire.

What Calm-First Training Looks Like

From sniffing and exploring to calm observation and everyday life skills, these real moments show the foundations of our approach:

Sabre Calm Sniffing

Freedom to Explore

Sniffing and exploring builds confidence, emotional flexibility and wellbeing, for confident dogs.

Waiting for Food

Everyday Skills

Training happens everywhere life happens—at home and out in the real world.

Consent Based Handling

Choice &
Cooperation

Dogs learn best when they feel safe enough to participate, assess, and make good choices.

Sabre Scatter Feeding

Natural Behaviour

Sniffing and enrichment help dogs regulate, explore, learn, and build confidence.

Gentle Watching, Not Scanning

Calm Observation

We help dogs notice the world without feeling they must react, allowing calmer choices to follow.

Small Choices Matter

We don’t just reward finished behaviours. We look for the small decisions that happen before them, because these are often the first signs that a dog is beginning to learn:

🐾 Pausing before acting.
🐾 Looking before responding.
🐾 Choosing a calmer approach.
🐾 Thinking instead of reacting.
🐾 Making good choices independently.

Tofu’s First Session

Tofu begins by throwing the toy towards me and barking for play. When I stay calm and gently lower my hand, she chooses to pick it up and bring it to me instead—without a cue.

🐾 Tofu throws the toy towards me and barks to ask for play.
🐾 I stay calm and gently lower my hand rather than starting the game.
🐾 She pauses and changes her approach.
🐾 She picks the toy up and brings it directly to me.
🐾 She makes that calmer choice without being given a cue.
